During conversations with my tutor, we discussed a range of potential topics for me to do my project/thesis on. The main topic discussed focused on universities not working or collaborating with students enough to utilise the skills that they have been taught at university. An example of this being communication material used around campuses. Posters and other forms of visual information are created for the purpose of information communication and that is what they do. However, that’s all they do. From personal experience and the experience of my tutor Andy Tennant, we concluded that it’s rare to see communication material created by the university to be visually considered. The main area that I concentrated on was advertisement material for design based masters. This is where the original idea stemmed from and is an area that I think should and could be vastly improved. I think this is a low priority for universities. Therefore, my plan was to create a company which completely takes this process out of a universities control. The company’s specific role is to collaborate with current design based master students in creating advertisements encouraging others to take the next step into a design based postgraduate course, using the skills they have developed over the duration of their time at university.
The branding section of the project related to the previously mentioned company which I have named ‘Design Based Masters’. ‘Design Based Masters’ specific role is to collaborate with current design based master students in creating advertisement encouraging others in taking the next step into a design based postgraduate course, using the skills they have developed over the duration of their time at university. For this part of the brief, I branded ‘Design Based Masters’ with a logo and a range of other advertisement material.
For this project, I also acted as the design based master student who collaborated to create advertisement material encouraging others to apply and attend a design based postgraduate course. I designed 3X A2 posters, using Cinema 4D to create the visuals for each poster. Throughout the year, I have been self-teaching the program Cinema 4D via the various modules and self-initiated work, progressively improving the level of complexity. This project was the biggest challenge yet.
As previously stated, I was acting as the design student whose aim was to construct visual advertisement material for design based postgraduate courses. It’s important to note that the posters would be the primary format of advertising. However, depending on each student who collaborates and the skills they possess, the medium of the advertisement may vary. Whilst I learnt a vast amount of new skills in Cinema 4D last semester, I also touched upon the creation of animations and videos. For this part of the project, I combined my knowledge of Cinema 4D and animation/video creation, creating a 20-30 second moving advertisement.
